This web page was designed for the descendants of Thomas D. Rigsby of Richwood, West Virgina.
Thomas was what we call a traveling man.
He was born in Wilkes County, North Carolina and traveled to Smyth County, Virgina, where he then married Mary Jane Baber on January 25, 1845.
The marriage certificate for this union lists his name spelling as Rigsbee.
During this time period Thomas and Mary Jane (Baber)
had 8 children while living in
Seven Mile Run, Virginia.
In 1863 Thomas joined the ranks of the Confederate Army
with his two sons, William Madison & Archibald H.
Thomas & William were in company I, 16th. cavalry CFA
(Confederate States of America)
Archibald H. enlisted in 1864, company I, 20th. VA regiment.
After Thomas left the service, Mary Jane Baber passed way
shortly after giving birth to their son Rassmus.
In July 1866, Thomas married Mary Jane Spence
in Tazewell County, VA.
This married resulted in the birth of 8 children.
In the 1870 census, they were living in Wayne County, WV.
In 1875 Thomas & Mary Jane re-located some of their family to
Crawford County, IA by wagon train.
The adult children with spouses stayed behind in
Pocahontas County, WV
Between 1882 and 1900 there are no records to be found because of
the fire that destroyed the repository that housed the census records.
In 1900 the census shows that they were located in
Richwood, WV (Nicholas County)
which is where Thomas D. spent the remaining years of his life
living on Hinkle Mountain.
Thomas D. passed away on April 8, 1911 at the age of 93.
Mary Jane Spence passed away on May 10, 1940.
Thomas D. Rigsby's final resting place is located on what was his property located on Hinkle Mountain in Richwood, WV.
